Northwestern Pennsylvania residents can help researchers who are trying to determine if new hummingbird migration routes are being developed through the state.
Erie’s Wild Birds Unlimited notes that the ruby-throated hummingbird fall migration is usually over by the second week of October. But if this year is anything like 2012, birdwatchers in Pennsylvania could see western hummingbirds at their feeders through November.
According to WBU, more than 90 hummingbirds from four western species were documented in Pennsylvania a year ago, and 49 were banded. Most were rufous, but calliope, Allen’s and black-chinned hummingbirds also were documented.
Hummingbird banders in the state ask that any non-ruby-throated humming birds seen this fall or winter, or any hummingbird seen after Oct. 15, be reported to them. In the northwest, contact Bob Mulvihill at robert.mulvihill@gmail.com.
